Transparency is the New Competitive Edge in Decarbonisation

Shipping is under mounting pressure to decarbonise—but certainty about what truly works remains limited. As regional regulations accelerate, shipowners are right to demand technologies that perform consistently in real operating environments, not just controlled trials. After years of mixed experiences with early energy-efficiency technologies, many owners are now asking a single, decisive question: can the technology sustain performance and deliver measurable benefits across the full range of conditions a vessel encounters?

In Splash247, Armada Technologies CEO Alex Routledge highlights hull air lubrication as a telling case study. Despite nearly two decades on the market, only around 600 systems are installed or on order worldwide—underscoring the sector’s continued need for clearer data, proven performance, and transparent validation.

Mr. Routledge writes:

“Shipowners’ perception of air lubrication stems directly from their experience with first-generation systems. Operators have encountered technology that promises much and may deliver satisfactory performance, but only in specific, ‘ideal’ conditions. Beyond these narrowly defined parameters, the same complex mechanical systems demand significant power consumption from compressors that erode net savings, add costs, and impose maintenance burdens.

Some second-generation air lubrication technologies tackle these questions and challenges but from a fundamentally different approach. Newer systems can eliminate compressors entirely.”

At Armada, we believe the next phase of clean technology will be defined by reliability, evidence and independent verification—the factors that ultimately build confidence, accelerate adoption, and drive meaningful progress on efficiency and emissions.
